Acid Reflux Natural Treatment

There have been many reports about the harms of antacids and acid reflux drugs over the years, but they have always been ridiculed by the mass media and the medical community. Although it is known that acid inhibitors and similar drugs must only be taken for a maximum of 2 months, many ignore the dangers and the side effect warnings.

Acid reflux is big business.  In 2006 alone Americans spent $942 million dollars on over-the-counter antacids, and a whopping 13.6 billion dollars on prescription acid suppressants. It’s a drug company’s dream come true

But acid reflux is not a disease, as the drug companies would have us believe. It is simply a condition, and one that can be healed.

The medical community would have us believe that only drugs can treat acid reflux. This is simply not true –there are natural ways to treat this condition.
After years of suffering from acid reflux, I decided to do something about it. I stopped taking prescribed drugs and experimented with natural home remedies. Through trial and error, using herbs, tonics, meditation and diet I did, indeed, cure himself.

The 3 Step Method – Natural Treatment for Acid Reflux

  • Step 1- Change you diet – find what foods are good for you and which ones are actually making you sick. Acid reflux is not something you “catch” like a cold, instead you develop it in time. What you are eating is a major factor to this
  • Step 2 – Change your lifestyle – eating only at specific hours and actually chewing your food teaches your body the right time to release acid and for how long. Don’t eat at night and try having smaller meals that are easier to digest.
  • Step 3 – Reduce stress – I know we live in struggling times, but when you’re upset, the digestive system is the first to suffer from this. You’ve got to learn how to relax and have more fun.

Had enough of choking on stomach acid and burning a hole in your chest? I pretty much had all my share of that.

In the  Acid Reflux Diet Cure ebook you’re going to find more about the real causes of acid reflux and how to get rid of it.

Natural Acid Reflux Remedies

Acid reflux is not a disease you catch, like a cold. You develop it over time, conditioned by your lifestyle, diet and eating habits. That’s why no pill can cure you, but only slightly take away the symptoms for a short while, in turn making you an addict to them.

Here’s some natural acid reflux remedies used from ancient times to stop the stomach and chest pain fast and without side-effects:

Baking Soda – this one surprised even me with its effectiveness. Pretty amazing when you thing about it, normal baking soda from your kitchen cupboard in a glass of water could be all you need to calm your acid reflux.

Swedish bitter is a traditional herbal tonic, a complex formula of 13 different detoxification Herbs. Bitter herbs have been used for digestive problems in Europe for thousands of years.

Apple Cider Vinegar – this is so counter intuitive that few people actually understand why it works so well. Eating it often promotes normal production of acids and enzymes.

Natural Acid Reflux Cures

Traditional medicine has taken a lot of criticism over the last century from the western medicine, the latter considered to be science-based. Modern doctors will tell you that traditional natural cures are not proven to work. But you have to understand that the tests they do on a medicine are rigged so that the only commonly accepted solutions can pass.

There’s a research institute that get sponsored by the Big Pharma to do these tests and they come to an agreement with similar testing labs and certify a certain drug. This doesn’t mean that it works. It only means that there’s a transfer of trust from the drug authorities to a commercial product to increase sales.

Also, natural cures are usually cheap, most of them consisting of plants that grow around pretty much everywhere, so commercializing them is difficult. Companies make a lot more money selling patented products for a premium price.

Proven Natural Cures For Acid Reflux

Some of these cures have been used successfully even from Egyptian times. Centuries of traditional medicine practice have proven the effectiveness of these cures, all of them with no dangerous side-effects like the modern drugs.

The apple cure is one of the most surprising that I’ve personally used. Eating a fresh red apple right before bed calms the stomach and guarantees a restful sleep. Usually during the night I woke up with heartburn, sore throat and dry mouth. Drinking water only aggravated the unease feeling. One apple a day keeps heartburn away.

Ginger tea is available in health food stores, and is helpful for acid reflux when used either with the meal or immediately following the meal. Ginger is helpful for indigestion and acid reflux, especially if caused by spicy foods.

Aloe Vera Juice – an anti-inflammatory component in this plant has popularized this extract to be one of the simplest yet most effective remedies. It has been used for thousands of years, dating back to ancient Egypt.

Cabbage Juice and Potato Juice – there have been studies which found raw cabbage juice to be useful in treating ulcers, in some cases in approximately 10 days.

Apple Cider Vinegar – having a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar servings per day provides instant relief with heartburn and GERD. It doesn’t taste very good though, I myself find it very hard to drink it mixed with water. So use it in a salad dressing at meal times.

Alongside these natural cures you have to also keep a food diet for acid reflux for maximum effects.

What Are The Symptoms of Hiatal Hernia

Many doctors say that a sliding hiatal hernia poses no real danger. The symptoms of a hiatal hernia are easy to miss in general, being mostly associated with the symptoms of acid reflux like:

  • heartburn
  • belching
  • chest pain
  • nausea

But in rare cases part of your stomach that protrudes into your chest can cause problems such as:

  • severe chest pain
  • difficulty with swallowing
  • obstruction of your esophagus

I myself have sometimes the feeling of something stuck in my throat, caused mostly by my acid reflux coming up into my esophagus. Treating symptoms requires keeping a hiatal hernia diet and changing your lifestyle accordingly.

Can Acid Reflux Cause Heart Palpitations?

Acid reflux, sleep apnea and heart palpitations are serious problems that you have to look after, otherwise problems that are more serious could result in untreated symptoms.

A person who suffers from sleep apnea may also complain of frequent headaches, dry mouth, and a sore throat in the morning, heart palpitations, urinating throughout the night,  chronic fatigue and memory problems.
People who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea have an increased risk of hypertension, stroke, heart disease and accidents while driving or working.

Acid reflux, sleep apnea and heart palpitations can all be traced in some way to the food we eat. Changing your lifestyle is the most important thing in curing them, positional treatment and an alkaline diet having a fast beneficial effect.

Foods To Eat With Acid Reflux

Changing your daily diet is a surefire way to get rid of heartburn and stomach pain. Some foods with low acidity also known as alkaline foods can greatly improve your condition.

  • Fruits: apples, bananas. both are well known to decrease acidity and have immediate effect calming pain
  • Vegetables: baked potatoes, broccoli, peas. Avoid frying them, instead cook the vegetables by baking and boiling.
  • Grains: rice, graham bread, corn bread.
  • Dairy: low fat cheese. I also found yogurt great, but it doesn’t work for all people.

I also use teas made from medicinal plants to decrease the acidity levels in my stomach with awesome results.

Acid Reflux – Foods To Avoid

Although Acid Reflux and heartburn are both treatable, reports say few try to. Left untreated, this condition can take your life. Due to the damage caused in time to the esophagus by acid, in time cancer develops. It has now become apparent, through studies and research, that people who suffer from acid reflux are likely to be predisposed to carcinoma of the esophagus.

There are a few well known foods that negatively impact the hyper-acidity in the stomach:

  • Fatty Foods – this includes all junk food. Hamburgers and hotdogs may taste great, but they will only aggravate the situation.
  • Acidic Foods like lemons, oranges, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, spaghetti, cheese.
  • Caffeine – It’s to be found in coffee and tea, and certain sodas as well. Read all labels if in doubt. Taking caffeine will cause gastric acid secretion, and that will lead to acid reflux.
  • Alcohol – try to limit your alcohol intake as it increases the risk of cancer by 3.5 times
  • Tabacco makes acid reflux worse. It increases acidity and further hurts the esophagus. Heartburn is a consequence of smoking.

Simple changes in diet can easily decrease the acidity levels and improve general condition.

Acid Reflux Disease (GERD) Symptoms

The symptoms in GERD or Acid Reflux Disease are closely related to the back up of acid and other materials from the stomach into the esophagus. It should be noted that the symptoms are not always present, sometimes they can dissapear for weeks at a time, but come back after a while.

Heartburn and Chest Pain is the most common of them. It is the unpleasant burning sensation felt into the chest, that can get worse if a person lays down, is lifting or after having a heavy meal. Sometimes the burning sensation moves into the throat area, along with a sour taste, as if the food has come back to the throat.

Sore Throat is a very common symptom of acid reflux. It is recommended that you seek professional advice as this could be a sign of a precursor condition for carcinoma.

Regurgitation is the reflex act of ejecting the contents of the stomach through the mouth. It is caused by some foods or combination of foods and leads to the acid and pieces of food to involuntarily come into the mouth or in severe cases to throwing up.

Trouble or Pain with Swallowing is a sign of cronic acid reflux, usually occurs after the reflux has been going on for a long time. The cause of such symptoms is due to damage of the esophagus as a result of long term acid reflux disease.

Nausea is a less common symptom, often not thought to be related to acid reflux, but can lead to losing weight very quickly because of eating less and a general weakening of the body.

Problems Breathing happens when material in the esophagus get sucked or aspirated into the lungs. This can cause symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and pneumonia.

Oral Symptoms Acid refluxed coming from the stomach into the mouth can irritate the gums, cause tooth decay and create an unpleasant taste and the feeling of excessive saliva in the mouth. Sometimes sufferers find going to the dentist hard because of the gagging reflex.

Repeated acid exposure to the esophagus can lead to Barrett’s esophagus (sometimes called Barrett’s syndrome, CELLO) which is an abnormal change in the cells at the bottom of the esophagus which is a precursor condition for carcinoma.  About 10% of Barrett’s Esophagus cases will develop into esophagus cancer.

Acid Reflux Surgery – Not For Me, Thanks

Acid reflux is such a poorly understood condition by the medical society, that many people spend years trying out prescription after prescription with no success.  When first going to the doctor complaining with heartburn or stomach pain, one gets a simple antacid drug and a “Don’t worry too much, it’s nothing serious”. After a while discomfort grows, prescriptions change again with no result and finally the doctor suggests surgery.

Why would you trust somebody that clearly doesn’t know what he’s dealing with in the first place?

I’ve had my share of doctors and medical bills and that’s about it… Doctors and bills… Years after I was first diagnosed, nobody could find a cause for my stomach pain so it was classified as a “stress disorder”. It turns out that although I was in high-school, I was so stressed out that I caused myself an ulcer and nothing could cure me but… surgery.

Back then surgery meant that they were just going to cut away damaged tissue from my stomach and esophagus. Luckily I didn’t ell for it and since then decided to ignore the medication and try the holistic approach.

Was it a smart decision? A few months after that I was already feeling much better. Guess what?… A change in diet and lifestyle is all it took to cure my acid reflux.

Is acid reflux surgery right for you? All I can say is that doctors can only make money by selling those antacids and putting you under the knife. Deciding what’s best for you though should be up to you.
